Medication & Prescriptions

  • No prescription needed for paracetamol, ibuprofen (up to 400mg), aspirin, antihistamines, anti-diarrhoea tablets, cold/flu remedies, antacids, and sunburn treatments. You must still buy from a pharmacy — supermarkets in Spain cannot sell any medication.
  • Prescription required for all antibiotics (strictly enforced since 2015), ibuprofen 600mg, sleeping pills, codeine-containing medication, omeprazole and corticosteroids.
  • EU prescriptions are valid in Spain under Directive 2011/24/EU. Bring your prescription from home and any pharmacy can fill it (the brand name may differ).
  • UK prescriptions are no longer automatically valid since Brexit. Get a Spanish doctor to re-issue if needed.

Pharmacy Tips for Tourists

  • Look for the green cross — All pharmacies display an illuminated green cross. If it's flashing/lit at night, the pharmacy is open.
  • Pharmacists can help — Spanish pharmacists are university-trained and can advise on minor ailments, recommend treatments, and save you a doctor visit.
  • Sunburn supplies — Every pharmacy stocks after-sun lotion, aloe vera, and high-SPF sunscreen at better prices than tourist shops.
  • Farmaguia app — Download the free Farmaguia app (iOS/Android) to find the nearest open pharmacy right now, including duty pharmacies at night.
  • Col·legi de Farmacèutics helpline — Call +34 93 244 07 10 to ask which pharmacy is on duty in your area.

Beach Safety & Health Tips

Stay safe and healthy during your visit to the Maresme coast

Beach Flag System

All Maresme beaches use a colour-coded flag system. Always check the flag before entering the water.

🟢

Green Flag

Safe to swim. Calm waters, lifeguard on duty.

🟡

Yellow Flag

Caution. Swim with care, stay close to shore. Strong currents possible.

🔴

Red Flag

No swimming. Dangerous conditions. Stay out of the water.

Lifeguards (June–September): Main Maresme beaches have lifeguards on duty during summer, typically 10:30am–7:00pm. Look for the red and yellow towers. Outside these hours, you swim at your own risk. Many beaches also have first aid posts (Creu Roja / Red Cross) near lifeguard stations.

Sun & Heat Safety

  • SPF 30+ minimum — The Mediterranean sun is intense, especially June–August. Reapply every 2 hours and after swimming.
  • Avoid 12pm–4pm — Peak UV hours. Seek shade, wear a hat and sunglasses. Heatstroke is a real risk for visitors not used to 35°C+ temperatures.
  • Stay hydrated — Carry water at all times. Spanish tap water is safe to drink throughout the Maresme.
  • Signs of heatstroke — Headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, hot dry skin. Move to shade, cool down with water, call 061 if symptoms persist.

Jellyfish & Sea Life

  • Jellyfish stings — Rinse with seawater (never freshwater). Remove tentacles with tweezers or a card edge. Apply vinegar if available. See a pharmacist for severe reactions.
  • Purple flag — Some beaches fly a purple flag to warn of jellyfish presence. Check before swimming.
  • Sea urchins — Watch where you step on rocky areas. Wear water shoes for rocky beaches and coves.
  • Beach first aid — Red Cross (Creu Roja) first aid posts on main beaches can treat stings and minor injuries during summer.
