Metro L9 Sud €5.90 ~2.5h+ 05:00–midnight Slowest — skip it

Option 3: Private Transfer or Taxi

The quickest and most comfortable option, especially for groups, families with luggage, or late-night arrivals when public transport stops running. Available 24/7 — the only option after ~22:30 when trains stop. Shared shuttles from €14/person, private sedans from €83, metered taxis ~€110–120.

Pre-Booked Transfers & Shuttles

Fixed price, driver waits at arrivals with a name board, flight monitoring if delayed. Cheaper than a metered taxi for longer distances to the Maresme coast.

Tip for groups: A private sedan (4 passengers) at €83 works out to ~€21 per person — only slightly more than the Sagalés bus, with door-to-door convenience.

Uber/Cabify: Being phased out in Barcelona. Use the FreeNow app instead (formerly MyTaxi) — it works with licensed Barcelona taxis.

Option 4: Airport Train (R2 Nord) + R1 Rodalies

The cheapest option from the airport. One single ticket covers the entire journey: take the R2 Nord to Sants Estació, then transfer to the R1 line. Rodalies trains are known for delays, so allow extra time.

1

Get to Terminal 2 train station

  • The train station is at Terminal 2 only (connected walkway from T2B)
  • If you arrive at T1: Take the free shuttle bus to T2 (every 6–11 minutes, runs 24/7, about 10–15 min)
2

Take the R2 Nord train to Sants Estació

  • Direction: Maçanet-Massanes or Sant Celoni (check platform display)
  • Runs every 30 minutes
  • Journey: ~19 minutes to Sants Estació
  • First train: 05:42 / Last train: 23:38
3

Transfer to the R1 Rodalies train at Sants Estació

  • At Sants Estació, follow signs to the R1 platform (same station, no need to exit)
  • Direction: Maçanet-Massanes or Blanes
  • Trains every 15–30 minutes
  • This takes you directly to every Maresme town (see full station list)
  • One ticket covers the whole journey — from €5.50 to Montgat up to €8.25 to Blanes
Heads up: Rodalies trains are notorious for delays and cancellations. Allow extra time, especially if you have a connection to make. The T-Casual card works on the R2 Nord (it does NOT work on the Metro L9 or Aerobus), so if you buy a multi-zone T-Casual, one trip covers the entire airport → Sants → R1 → Maresme journey.

Option 5: Metro L9 Sud

The metro serves both T1 and T2, but it does not go to the city centre directly. You must transfer at Zona Universitària to reach Plaça Catalunya — making it the slowest option at around 50 minutes just to the city, before you even get on the R1.

  • Price: €5.90 (special airport ticket — T-Casual does NOT work)
  • Hours: 05:00–midnight (24h on Saturdays, until 02:00 on Fridays)
  • Frequency: every 7 minutes

Our recommendation: Skip the metro. The Aerobus or Sagalés 603 are faster and more comfortable.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Staying in Calella, Pineda, Malgrat or Blanes? The Sagalés 603 direct bus is often the smartest choice — no transfers, straight from the airport.
  • Aerobus is great for daytime — leaves from both terminals, drops you at Plaça Catalunya with R1 right there. But useless after ~9pm as the last R1 to Maresme is around 22:30.
  • Rodalies delays are common — if you take the all-train route (R2+R1), build in extra time. Don’t rely on tight connections.
  • Arriving at T1? For the train, you need the free shuttle to T2 (add 10–15 min). If you want to skip the shuttle, take the Aerobus directly from T1.
  • Google Maps works for real-time Barcelona train schedules — very accurate.
  • Keep your ticket — you need it to exit through the barriers at your destination.
  • Groups of 3–4? A taxi split 4 ways can be cheaper per person than public transport.

Girona-Costa Brava Airport is actually the closest airport to the northern Maresme — Calella, Pineda de Mar, Santa Susanna and Malgrat de Mar are all around 40 km away, under 45 minutes by road. Here is the verified summer-2026 guide to every way of making that hop.

✅ The direct bus is back for summer 2026. The Sagalés 605 direct coastal bus (Girona Airport → Blanes → Calella → Canet de Mar) resumed on 22 June 2026 with an updated timetable — around €11 single to Calella. Check current times at sagalesairportline.com or phone Sagalés on 900 13 00 14. The Sagalés / Barcelona Bus ticket desk is to the right as you exit arrivals — the bus parking area is a 5-minute walk in the same direction.

Option 4 — Sagalés to Lloret, then Blanes R1 (Summer Shortcut)

GRO → Lloret de Mar → Blanes → R1 south to the Maresme: the fastest public-transport chain in summer — two transfers but no Barcelona detour. If you’re travelling between June and October, this is faster than going via Barcelona. The Sagalés 613 (or year-round Moventis 86) drops you in Lloret; a local bus connects to Blanes RENFE station; the R1 then runs south through every Maresme town. Two transfers, but it cuts ~1 hour off the Barcelona route.

1

GRO → Lloret de Mar

  • Sagalés line 613: ~35 min, €12 single (return fares vary — check sagales.com). Seasonal: 3×/day Jun–Oct, 2–4×/week Oct–May — verify before relying on it.
  • Moventis Sarfa line 86: year-round daily, ~55 min, fare ~€5–12 (buy online at compras.moventis.estickets cannot be bought on board).
2

Lloret → Blanes RENFE station

  • Take the Moventis Lloret–Blanes urban bus (~25 min, ~€3–4) from Lloret bus station to Blanes RENFE
  • Alternative: taxi Lloret → Blanes station, ~€15–20
3

Take the R1 south from Blanes

  • Blanes is the northern terminus of the R1 — every train starts here, so frequencies are good
  • Direction: Hospitalet de Llobregat / L’Hospitalet (southbound)
  • Stops at every Maresme town: Malgrat, Santa Susanna, Pineda, Calella, Sant Pol, Canet, Arenys, Caldes, Mataró, Vilassar, Premià, Montgat
  • Fare: €2.55–€4.90 depending on zone
Caveat: the Lloret–Blanes urban bus is infrequent on Sundays and after ~21:00. If your flight lands late, plan a taxi for that hop or go via Barcelona instead.

Option 5 — Sagalés 607 to Girona City, then Regional Train

Cheap and quick to the bus, but the onward train is the bottleneck. A cheap short hop to Girona city (line 607, ~€2.80–2.90), but the onward train to the Maresme is slow and requires a transfer at Maçanet-Massanes or Barcelona. Worth it only if you actually want to stop in Girona city for the day — not as a pure transit route.

1

Take Sagalés 607 to Girona city bus station

  • Frequency: hourly from ~05:00, coordinated with flights
  • Journey: ~17–30 minutes
  • Fare: ~€2.80–2.90 — pay the driver (cash) on the airport-bound leg
2

Walk to Girona RENFE station (5 min)

  • Girona bus station and train station are next to each other
3

Choose your train route

Option A — Via Maçanet-Massanes (faster on paper):

  • Regional train Girona → Maçanet-Massanes
  • Change to the R1 Rodalies south
  • Get off at Calella, Pineda, Santa Susanna, Malgrat, Blanes
  • Total: ~2h / Price: ~€8–10

Option B — Via Barcelona (more frequent):

  • Train Girona → Barcelona Sants or Passeig de Gràcia
  • Transfer to R1 Rodalies north
  • Total: ~3h / Price: ~€12–15

💡 The Maçanet connection — honest take

  • Maçanet-Massanes is where the R1 line from Barcelona connects to long-distance trains. In theory, a Girona → Maçanet → R1 chain is faster than going via Barcelona.
  • In practice, regional trains from Girona to Maçanet are infrequent and the wait at Maçanet can be 30+ minutes.
  • Check rodalies.gencat.cat before committing — if your connection is more than 20 min away, the Lloret → Blanes shortcut (Option 4) or a private transfer is the better call.

Option 6 — Bus to Lloret, then Dofí Jet Ferry (Seasonal)

The scenic summer arrival — long, but unforgettable. If you’re arriving in summer with no luggage rush, this is the most memorable way in. Take the Moventis 86 or Sagalés 613 to Lloret de Mar, then board a Dofí Jet Boats coastal ferry south to Calella, Malgrat or Blanes. Slow, scenic, runs roughly May–October, weather-dependent.

1

GRO → Lloret de Mar by bus

  • Same options as Option 4: Sagalés 613 (~€12, summer only) or Moventis 86 (~€5–12, year-round)
  • Journey: ~35–55 min
2

Walk to Lloret beach jetty

  • The Dofí Jet pier is on Lloret’s main beach, ~10 min walk from the bus station
3

Board the Dofí Jet south

  • Operator: Dofí Jet Boats
  • Stops at Blanes, Malgrat, Santa Susanna, Pineda, Calella
  • Frequency: typically 1–3 sailings per day in season (roughly May–October, weather-dependent)
  • Fare: ~€15–20 one-way, varies by route
Seasonal only. Dofí Jet ferries run roughly May–October and are weather-dependent — they do not run in winter. Confirm sailings at dofijetboats.com before relying on this option, especially in the shoulder months.

Option 7 — Self-Drive (Rental Car)

Maximum flexibility — useful if you plan to explore beyond the coast. If you want side-trips to Girona city, the Costa Brava, Cap de Creus or even Andorra, a rental car is the easiest move. The AP-7 motorway and C-32 toll road both run directly south to the Maresme; Calella is ~30 minutes from GRO.

Routing

  • GRO → AP-7 south → exit 9b (Blanes / Lloret) or continue to C-32 for direct Maresme access
  • Distance: 39–42 km to Calella; 38 km to Malgrat
  • Drive time: ~28–35 min
  • Tolls: AP-7 between Mataó and Maresme exits is mostly toll-free since 2021; some northern sections may still charge

Rental Operators at GRO

All major rental brands operate desks in the arrivals hall: Avis, Budget, Centauro, Enterprise, Europcar, Goldcar, Hertz, Sixt. Book online for the best rates — on-arrival walk-up pricing is usually 2–3× higher.

Aggregator tip: compare across operators on Discover Cars or Rentalcars.com — both pull the same airport-desk inventory but often differ by €10–20/day.
Heads up: hotel parking in Maresme resorts is limited and often paid (€8–15/day). Confirm with your hotel before committing to a car. Street parking is mostly blue-zone metered in summer.

Taxis & Private Transfers from Girona Airport

Door-to-door and the fastest option at ~30–55 minutes. Girona Airport is physically closer to the northern Maresme than to Barcelona. Malgrat, Santa Susanna and Calella are all under 45 minutes by car. Prices vary by operator, time of day and season — ranges below reflect aggregator pricing from Kiwitaxi, Welcome Pickups, Costa Brava Taxi and MyTransfers.

Aena publishes that fixed coastal-town taxi fares exist from Girona Airport but does not list them online. For a guaranteed price, call ahead: Taxis Vilobí Onyar +34 972 935 736, Gitaxi, Radiotaxi Girona, or Taxi Girona Raimon.

Which company? For the shared shuttles (Flybus, MoventisExperience, Terravision) see Option 2 above — booking links and prices are there. The private-transfer companies serving Girona are largely the same ones as from Barcelona (Welcome Pickups, Chofix, Kiwitaxi and co.) — see the Barcelona transfer table for how they compare on service and booking.

Tip for groups: a private transfer at €100 split between 4 is €25/head — barely more than the bus and 2 hours faster door-to-door. For families with luggage, it’s the obvious choice.

💡 Tips for Girona Airport

  • Always verify the 605 timetable before travel. The direct GRO–Maresme coastal bus resumed on 22 June 2026, but this line has come and gone in recent years and times change. Check sagalesairportline.com or phone 900 13 00 14 within a week of your trip.
  • The bus stop is to the right as you exit arrivals — about a 5-min walk. Ticket desks (Sagalés and shared-shuttle operators) are right there too.
  • Book ahead in summer. The Sagalés coach to Barcelona and Flybus shared shuttles fill up after popular Ryanair flights. Book online to guarantee your seat.
  • If you’re staying in Lloret or Blanes, Girona Airport is your best choice — it’s much closer than Barcelona Airport.
  • Ryanair fares to Girona are often dramatically cheaper than to Barcelona El Prat. The extra transport time can be worth the savings.
  • Download the Rodalies de Catalunya app for live R1 train schedules — essential for planning transfers.

Which Airlines Fly to Girona?

Ryanair dominates — with routes from across Europe. Girona-Costa Brava Airport is essentially a Ryanair hub. The vast majority of flights (90%+) are operated by Ryanair, with routes connecting to cities across Europe.

Routes by Country

  • United Kingdom: London Stansted, Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol, Leeds Bradford
  • Ireland: Dublin
  • Italy: Milan Bergamo, Rome Ciampino, Bologna, Naples
  • Germany: Frankfurt Hahn, Dortmund, Cologne/Bonn
  • Netherlands: Eindhoven
  • Belgium: Charleroi (Brussels South)
  • Poland: Warsaw Modlin, Kraków, Katowice, Gdańsk, Wrocław
  • Scandinavia: Various seasonal routes

Some seasonal charter flights also operate from Nordic countries during summer.

Good to know: Girona-Costa Brava Airport is 12 km south of Girona city and about 92 km north of Barcelona. Budget airlines sometimes market it as “Barcelona Girona” — don’t be confused, it’s NOT Barcelona Airport. From Girona, the Maresme coast (Calella, Pineda, Malgrat) is actually closer than Barcelona.

If using the Aerobus (€7.45) to Pl. Catalunya instead, you need a separate R1 ticket. Check Rodalies website for live schedules.

Towns Without a Train Station

  • Tiana — Nearest station: Montgat. Take TUSGSAL bus B29 or B35 (~10 min)
  • Sant Vicenç de Montalt — Nearest station: Caldes d’Estrac (9 min walk). Also Moventis bus C-21 from Mataró
  • Lloret de Mar — No train at all. Take R1 to Blanes, then Pujol bus to Lloret (every 30 min, 20 min). Or use the Terravision shuttle direct from the airport.

R1 Schedule

  • To Mataró: Every 6–10 minutes (peak/off-peak)
  • To Calella: Every 15–30 minutes
  • To Blanes: Every 30 minutes
  • First train from El Clot to Calella: ~05:20
  • Last train from El Clot to Calella: ~22:30
  • Times vary slightly by day — always check the live schedule below before travelling.

From Girona Airport: Via Blanes vs Via Barcelona

Blanes is the northern terminus of the R1 — so from Girona Airport the Lloret → Blanes shortcut puts you on the train far faster than detouring through Barcelona: Calella is ~1h 50m via Blanes against ~3h 15m via Barcelona. Total journey times from Girona Airport, with realistic transfer buffers:

Town Via Barcelona Via Blanes
Mataró~2h 45m~2h 30m
Arenys de Mar~3h~2h 10m
Canet de Mar~3h~2h 5m
Sant Pol de Mar~3h 10m~2h

Santa Susanna~3h 20m~1h 40m

Blanes~3h 30m(start point)

See Option 4 in the Girona section for the step-by-step Lloret → Blanes chain, and Option 3 for the year-round Barcelona route. The 605 direct bus skips the train entirely.

💡 Tips for Train Travel

  • Buy tickets from machines — they accept cards and have an English option
  • Keep your ticket — you need it to exit through the barriers
  • Sit on the right side (heading north from Barcelona) for sea views on parts of the journey
  • Don’t miss the last train — after ~22:30, a taxi back from Barcelona to Calella costs ~€100+
  • Between Maresme towns: the R1 takes just 3–5 minutes per stop — easy for visiting neighbouring towns

Getting Around Maresme

Local buses, taxis and getting between towns

Local Buses

For most trips between Maresme towns, the R1 train is easiest. Buses are useful for reaching inland towns or places without a train station.

Main Operators

  • Moventis (Sagalés) — Main interurban operator for Maresme. Lines include E11 (Barcelona–Mataró express), C-21 (Mataró–Sant Vicenç de Montalt), C-22 (coastal/inland)
  • TUSGSAL — Southern Maresme (Badalona, Montgat, Tiana area). Lines B29/B35 connect Tiana to Montgat station
  • Pujol (Autocars Pujol) — Blanes to Lloret de Mar to Tossa de Mar (every 30 min, ~20 min journey, ~€2–3)
Night bus: The N82 runs along the coast at night. Check Moventis for the current schedule.

Local Taxis (Between Towns)

Each Maresme town has local taxi services. You’ll usually find them at the train station or call for a pickup. Short hops between neighbouring towns are inexpensive (€8–15).

  • Tipping: Not expected in Spain. Rounding up is appreciated.
  • Card payment: Accepted in most taxis, but carry some cash as a backup in smaller towns.

Arriving at Night? Your Options After Midnight

Many budget flights arrive late — here’s how to get to Maresme

The problem: R1 trains to Maresme stop around 22:30. The R2 Nord airport train stops at 23:38. If your flight lands after 11pm, public transport to the coast is not available.

What Still Runs After Midnight (Barcelona Airport)

TransportLast ServiceTo Maresme?
AerobusRuns 24/7 (every 20 min after 1am)To Plaça Catalunya only — no onward Maresme connection

Taxi24/7Yes — ~€114 to Calella (metered, night rate)
Pre-booked transfer24/7Yes — from ~€83 to Calella (fixed price)

Our Recommendation for Late Arrivals

If your flight arrives after 10pm and you’re heading to the Maresme coast, pre-book a private transfer. It’s cheaper than a metered taxi, the driver monitors your flight for delays, and you get dropped at your hotel door. See Option 3: Private Transfer or Taxi above for recommended companies and prices.

Alternatively, if you’re on a tight budget: take the Aerobus to Plaça Catalunya (€7.45), stay overnight nearby, and catch the first R1 train from Plaça Catalunya at ~05:30 the next morning.

Landing Late at Girona?

Both the 605 direct coastal bus and the Sagalés coach to Barcelona Estació del Nord finish in the evening — and even if you catch the Barcelona coach, there is no R1 train north after ~22:30. For arrivals after ~22:00, plan on a metered taxi (~€100–140 to Calella, ~30–35 minutes) or a pre-booked private transfer (~€70–110). Fixed coastal-town taxi fares exist from Girona Airport — for a guaranteed price, call Taxis Vilobí Onyar on +34 972 935 736. Full price table: Girona taxis & transfers.
